New requirements in place October 1, 2008

As of October 1, 2008 any new home, which is permitted, shall be built to comply with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) New York Energy Star labeled Homes Program requirements.

Prior to the issuance of a building permit for any subject dwelling, the applicant shall certify that the subject dwelling shall fully comply with the Energy Star requirements using either the HERS method or the Builder Option Package method.

Prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy for any subject dwelling, the applicant shall certify that the subject dwelling satisfied LIPA Energy Star Program requirements by providing the Building Department with a HERS Certificate (HERC).

LIPA offers referrals to home builders and developers that build ENERGY STAR qualified new homes, lenders that offer energy efficient mortgages, utilities that offer special incentives to buyers, and home energy raters that can verify the energy efficiency of a home. To learn more about the new requirements and to find referral information, visit LIPA's Energy Star web site.
